Facebook and Instagram have just logged people all over world out of their accounts

The social media sites have mysteriously logged all of its users out

Facebook has seemingly logged all of its users out with no explanation.

In what looks like a repeat of the Twitter apocalypse of 2022, when users were similarly logged out suddenly, social media users are completely lost as to why the website and app has gone down.

It was not just Facebook though, as Instagram, which is owned by Meta, was also down. Users reported problems including being logged out of Facebook — and when they attempted to log back in, were shown an error message such as, “Something went wrong. Please try again.” According to monitoring service Downdetector, error reports spiked about 10:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, March 5. As of approximately 11 a.m., Downdetector had received more than 500,000 error reports. About 76% of the problems reported by Facebook users related to trouble logging in.

Meta says it has resolved a “technical issue” which caused Facebook, Messenger and Instagram to go down.

Hundreds of thousands of users worldwide were unable to access them for around two hours on Tuesday. People trying to log onto the websites and apps were finding error messages and were unable to refresh their feeds as normal. Meta also apologised to those who had been affected, saying it resolved the problem as quickly as it could.

Tracking website Downdetector indicated the outages had affected multiple countries. Meta’s platforms are some of the most popular in the world. Facebook has three billion active monthly users, while Instagram is expected to hit 1.4 billion worldwide later this year.

Threads, its rival to Twitter, that was launched in 2023, also reported outages. WhatsApp – which Meta also owns – was unaffected.
